Under the influence of a continuous decrease in transportation costs, European society has moved towards more and more spatial disintegration — in the sense that travel resistance diminished to the point where there was no longer any need to locate residence, workplace, shopping and leisure facilities in one locality. Diffusion came to be the basic characteristic. Companies, institutions and residences became more and more ‘footloose’, and city planners and architects felt free to design structures without giving a thought to their transportation effects. That freedom, for the time being at least, is now a thing of the past. Transportation will be an important concern in future designs, which means that city planners will have to co-operate more than ever with traffic engineers and transportation economists to arrive at sensible new structures. The less diffuse society to which we are once more moving, calls for integrated city planning, which might well make for new cities that are better to live in than they have been for a long time. And that is the essence of a policy of reurbanisation.
